Introduction: Building a Simple Sawhorse
This guide provides a step-by-step approach to building a sturdy and reliable sawhorse. This DIY project is perfect for beginners and will enhance any workshop or job site.
Materials Needed:
  • (4) 2x4 lumber at 36" for legs
  • (2) 2x4 lumber at 30" for the top support
  • (2) 2x4 lumber at 12" for the braces
  • Wood screws (2 1/2" recommended)
  • Wood glue
Tools Required:
  • Saw (circular saw, hand saw, or miter saw)
  • Drill with drill bits
  • Screwdriver or drill with screwdriver bits
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Safety glasses
  • Optional: Clamps
Step 1: Cutting the Lumber
Carefully measure and cut the lumber according to the dimensions listed in the "Materials Needed" section. Ensure the cuts are square for stable sawhorses. Use safety glasses.
Step 2: Assemble the Legs
Take two of the 36" pieces for the legs. At the top of each leg, angle the piece so that they will spread out to give the legs a wider base. Attach the 30" top supports to the angled legs. Each 30" piece connects 2 legs. Apply wood glue to the joint where the legs meet the top support, then secure it with screws. Predrill holes to prevent the wood from splitting.
Step 3: Adding the Braces
Attach the 12" braces between the legs. These provide stability and prevent the legs from splaying outward. Position the braces approximately midway down the legs. Apply wood glue to the brace ends where they meet the legs, and secure with screws. Pre-drill holes to prevent splitting.
Step 4: Repeat for the Second Sawhorse
Follow steps 2 and 3 to build the second sawhorse. This is essential for most projects that require two supports.
Step 5: Sanding and Finishing (Optional)
If desired, sand down any rough edges or splinters on the sawhorses. You can also apply a coat of paint or sealant to protect the wood and improve its appearance.
Conclusion: Using Your New Sawhorses
Congratulations! You have successfully built a set of sawhorses. These will be invaluable for a wide range of projects, from cutting lumber to assembling furniture. Store them properly to ensure their longevity. Be sure to always use them on a flat surface.
